Why Bamboo Behaves Differently in the Mountains
Western North Carolina swings from damp summers to bone-dry winters with the woodstove running, and bamboo responds to that swing more sharply than most people expect. Strand-woven bamboo is compressed under extreme pressure, which makes it dense and dent resistant, but density does not mean the plank stops moving with humidity. The floors that fail here are almost always the ones that were installed the week they arrived on the truck, out of a cold garage, onto an untested subfloor.
We handle that the boring way. Moisture readings on the subfloor and the material before anything gets opened. Acclimation in the actual room, at the actual living temperature, for as long as the manufacturer specifies. Correct expansion gaps at every wall and vertical. It is unglamorous work and it is the entire difference between a floor that looks like this in fifteen years and one that gaps at every seam by the second winter.
Know Before You Choose
Three Constructions, Three Very Different Floors
Bamboo gets sold as one product. It is not. The construction method decides the hardness, the price, and how the floor ages, and the difference between them is larger than the difference between red oak and white oak.
Strand-Woven Bamboo
The hardest option we carry and the one most people should be looking at. Heated bamboo is shredded into strands, then woven and compressed under enormous pressure with resin binders. The result tests around 3,000 on the Janka scale and up, against roughly 1,290 for red oak and 1,360 for white oak. The grain reads as fine threads rather than the segmented knuckle pattern people associate with older bamboo. If you have large dogs, a mudroom entry, or kids who will absolutely drop things, this is the construction that shrugs it off.
Carbonized Bamboo
Carbonizing is a heat treatment, not a stain. The bamboo is baked until the natural sugars caramelize, which drives a warm amber-brown tone all the way through the plank rather than sitting on the surface. That through-color matters later, because a sanded carbonized floor still looks carbonized, while a sanded stained floor does not. One caution worth knowing: in older horizontal and vertical constructions, carbonizing softens the material noticeably. In strand-woven, the compression sets the density regardless, so a carbonized strand plank and a natural strand plank test the same.
Bamboo Installation and Acclimation
Bamboo can go down nailed, glued, or floating, and the right answer depends on your subfloor, not on preference. Concrete slabs and below-grade rooms usually mean glue-down over a moisture barrier. Wood subfloors on grade or above are candidates for nail-down. Floating installs are the fastest and the most forgiving of minor subfloor variation, with the tradeoff of a slightly hollower sound underfoot. We test first and then tell you which one your house wants.

Expansion gaps covered properly at every wall and vertical, because the gap has to be there and it also has to disappear.
Bamboo Regrows While Oak Is Still Getting Started
A moso bamboo culm reaches harvest maturity in roughly five to seven years. A white oak suitable for flooring takes somewhere north of sixty. Bamboo also regrows from its existing root system after cutting, so a harvested grove is not a replanted grove, it is the same plant sending up new culms. That is the honest case for bamboo as a renewable material, and it is a strong one.

How much does bamboo flooring cost in Asheville?
We do not publish a per-square-foot number, and any flooring company that does is quoting you a floor they have not seen. Bamboo pricing moves with construction type, since strand-woven costs more than horizontal or vertical, and installed cost moves with subfloor condition, install method, stair work, and how much prep the room needs. Is carbonized bamboo softer than natural bamboo?
It depends entirely on the construction. In classic horizontal and vertical bamboo, yes, the carbonizing heat treatment softens the material somewhat, which is where the reputation comes from. In strand-woven bamboo, no. Strand-woven planks are compressed to the same density whether or not they were carbonized first, so a carbonized strand floor and a natural strand floor test essentially the same on hardness. If you want the caramel color and you also want maximum dent resistance, carbonized strand-woven gives you both.
Can a bamboo floor be refinished later?
Sometimes, and with more caveats than a hardwood floor. Strand-woven bamboo is extremely dense, which makes sanding slow and demanding work that not every crew will take on. The wear layer thickness matters too, since engineered constructions have less to work with than solid. One thing in your favor with carbonized bamboo: the color runs through the whole plank, so sanding does not remove it. That is not true of stained bamboo, where the color sits on the surface and comes off with the finish. Bring us the manufacturer and model and we will tell you honestly whether refinishing is realistic for your specific floor.
How long does a bamboo floor installation take?
The install itself typically runs two to four days for an average room count, but the calendar is longer than the labor because of acclimation. Material needs to sit in the room where it will live, at normal temperature and humidity, for the window the manufacturer specifies before anything is cut. Skipping that step is the single most common cause of bamboo floor failure, and we will not do it. Expect us to walk you through the full timeline at estimate so there are no surprises.
How do I clean and maintain a bamboo floor?
Sweep or vacuum on a hard-floor setting regularly, since grit is what actually scratches a floor. Damp mop with a cleaner made for finished wood floors, never a steam mop and never a wet mop, because standing water is bamboo's worst enemy. Use felt pads under furniture, mats at exterior doors, and keep indoor humidity in a reasonable band year round, which in this region usually means a humidifier in winter. Can I see bamboo samples before I order?
Yes, and you should. Samples are $5.99 each and you can order them from the collection above or pick them up at either showroom, 116 Montreat Rd in Black Mountain or 301 10th Street NW in Conover. Bamboo tone shifts noticeably between showroom lighting and afternoon sun in your own living room, particularly with carbonized caramel tones, so take a couple home and live with them for a few days before you decide.
