Five Tone Families, One Chart

DuraSeal Neutral on Red Oak

Heading: Light and Natural

Country White, Neutral, Rustic Beige, and Weathered Oak keep rooms bright and make small spaces read larger. They also hide dust and pet hair better than any other group on this chart.

DuraSeal Golden Pecan on White Oak

Warm and Golden

Golden Oak, Golden Pecan, Fruitwood, and Colonial Maple lean amber. They flatter oak and pine, warm up north-facing rooms, and sit comfortably in traditional and mountain-cabin interiors.

DuraSeal Spice Brown on Red Oak

Medium Brown

The largest group on the chart. Special Walnut, English Chestnut, Provincial, and Antique Brown are the safe middle ground: neutral enough for resale, deep enough to hide traffic patterns.

DuraSeal True Black on Red Oak

Dark and Dramatic

Jacobean, Espresso, Ebony, and True Black deliver high contrast against light walls and pale rugs. Beautiful, and honest about it: they show dust and scratches sooner than any other family.

DuraSeal Classic Gray on White Oak

Gray and Weathered

Classic Gray, Silvered Gray, Warm Gray, and Dark Gray read coastal or modern-rustic. These are the most species-sensitive colors on the chart and the ones that most need a floor sample first.

Your Wood Species Changes the Color

The same DuraSeal wood floor stain looks like two different colors on red oak and white oak. Red oak carries pink and salmon undertones that fight gray stains and warm up browns. White oak runs tan and slightly olive, which is why grays and light naturals photograph so well on it. Hickory and maple are denser and absorb less pigment, so colors land lighter than the chart suggests.

We Test on Your Floor, Not a Board

Every swatch on this page was photographed on white oak under studio lighting. Your room has different light, different walls, and different furniture. Once your floor is sanded, we brush your top choices in small blocks directly onto the bare wood and leave them to dry. You walk the room morning and evening, pick the winner, and we go from there.

Five Questions That Narrow 36 Colors to Three

How much light?

North-facing and low-light rooms lose depth under dark stains. Warm mediums hold their character in dim light. South-facing rooms can carry Ebony or Jacobean without going cave-like.

Dogs, kids, or both?

Mid-tone browns with visible grain forgive the most. Very dark and very light floors both show more, just different things: dark shows dust, light shows scuffs.

What are the walls doing?

Cool gray and greige walls pair with the gray family or clean mediums. Cream and beige walls want warm or golden tones. Fighting your wall color is the most common regret.

Staying or selling?

If you may list the house in five years, medium browns and light naturals have the widest appeal. Very dark and heavily gray floors are a stronger taste.

How much sheen?

Matte and satin hide imperfections and read modern. Semi-gloss reflects more light and reads traditional. The same stain shifts noticeably between sheens, so choose both together.

Stain Sets the Color, Finish Sets the Life

DuraSeal stain gives you the color. The finish on top determines how long it lasts. Bona Traffic HD is our workhorse for busy households. Bona Mega ONE dries fast and is low-VOC. Rubio Monocoat and Osmo Polyx-Oil give a natural matte European look and spot-repair easily.

Keeping the Color You Chose

Sweep more than you mop

Grit is what dulls a finish. A microfiber dust mop several times a week does more for your floor than any cleaning product on the shelf.

Use the right cleaner

Skip vinegar, steam mops, and oil soaps. They break down polyurethane and leave residue that interferes with any future recoat.

Manage the sun

Every stain shifts under direct UV over the years. Rotate rugs and use blinds during peak hours so the covered areas age at the same rate as the exposed ones.

Recoat before you refinish

A screen and recoat every several years refreshes the finish without touching the stain. It is the cheapest way to keep the color you picked looking new.

25 Trees for Every Floor We Install

Choosing a wood floor should not come at the forest's expense. We plant 25 trees for every floor we install, and we have planted over 40,000 since 2016. Beautiful floors and healthy forests are not opposing goals.

DuraSeal Stain Questions, Answered

How much do DuraSeal stain samples cost?

Samples are $5.99 each. Most people order three or four finalists after browsing the chart, which is a small price for avoiding a color you will live with for a decade. Bring them home, set them on the floor, and look at them at different times of day. Consultations are free, and we do not charge for the floor sampling we do during a refinishing project.

Which DuraSeal stain colors look best on red oak versus white oak?

Red oak has pink and salmon undertones, so grays can turn muddy or slightly purple on it and warm browns can go orange. White oak runs tan and neutral, which is why the gray family and light naturals perform so well there. If you have red oak and want gray, that is achievable, but it takes the right color choice and a floor sample first.

How long does a full color change take?

Plan on five to seven days for a color change, since it includes a complete sand to bare wood, stain sampling, full stain application, and multiple coats of protective finish with cure time between them. A full sand and refinish in your existing color runs four to seven days. A screen and recoat, which does not change color, takes one to two days.

Will my stain color fade or change over time?

Some shift is normal and expected. UV exposure lightens some pigments and deepens others, and the wood itself continues to amber underneath regardless of stain. Rugs and furniture that stay put for years create visible outlines. Rotating rugs and controlling direct sun during peak hours keeps the aging even across the floor.

Do dark DuraSeal stain colors really show more dirt?

Yes, but not more dirt than a light floor, just different dirt. Dark floors reveal dust, pet hair, and footprints. Light floors hide dust and reveal scuffs, dark scratches, and mud. Mid-tone browns with visible grain camouflage the most overall. Choose based on which mess your household actually generates.

Can I see the full DuraSeal stain chart in person?

Yes. Both showrooms carry physical stain samples you can hold against your own paint chips and fabric swatches.
